VITAL SHADOW - EGOTISM

Here is what is said about that one on Wiki:

"Egotism is the drive to maintain and enhance favorable views of oneself, and generally features an inflated opinion of one's personal features and importance. It often includes intellectual, physical, social and other over estimations.

The egotist has an overwhelming sense of the centrality of the 'Me', that is to say of their personal qualities. Egotism means placing oneself at the core of one's world with no concern for others, including those loved or considered as "close," in any other terms except those set by the egotist."

Here are some variations of this concept:
  • Self-centeredness
  • Egomania
  • Egocentrism
  • Egocentricity
  • Self-interest
  • Selfishness
  • Self-seeking
  • Self-serving
  • Self-regard
  • Self-love
  • Narcissism
  • Self-admiration
  • Vanity
  • Conceit
  • Self-importance
  • Boastfulness
  • Elitism
  • Grandiosity
  • Hubris
  • Megalomania
  • Narcissism
  • Pride
  • Selfishness
  • Solipsism
  • Spoiled child
  • Excluding
  • Withdrawing
  • Ignoring
  • Separating
  • Neglecting
  • Blocking
  • Depriving
  • Monopolizing
  • Underestimating
"Hubris - Extreme pride or self-confidence. Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one's own competence, accomplishments or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power. The adjectival form of the noun hubris is "hubristic"."

"Conceit - Excessive pride in oneself."

"Boastfulness - To speak with pride, often excessive pride, about oneself or something related to oneself"

"Solipism - The philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist. As an epistemological position, solipsism holds that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known, and might not exist outside the mind. As a metaphysical position, solipsism goes further to the conclusion that the world and other minds do not exist."

Pretty clear, right?

Feel what happens if you own that shadow.

For instance if someone calls you "Egotistical", you might say "Yes I am! I come first and I am the most important person in my life!"

See? That's owning it!

In coaching, that's something I teach my clients!

Take care of your needs first!

Listen to what you want!

Etc.

-----

Greed is another aspect of egotism.

It is the desire to concentrate money and resources without sharing them.

It is interesting to look at greed because the original impulse is simply an urge to create safety.

It is the desire to accumulate goods or money to sustain oneself.

Imagine being in the wild 40'000 years ago.

You accumulated food and grains for the winter and a rival tribe tries to steal them from you.

There won't be enough for everyone.

You have to protect your tribe and decide not to share.

Fast forward to today.

Someone wants to borrow money from you.

You say no.

They call you greedy.

If you have plenty, sharing might be good.

-----

I love it when someone says "You don't want to help me! You are being selfish"

What they are saying is "I am being selfish too by saying that and trying to put my needs above yours".

-----

Another typical attack is "Oh that's just your ego speaking!"

Your answer to that can be "And who is talking to me right now? An open channel of the cosmic light?"

Look, we all function from both ego and spirit all the time

That includes you and I.

That's the nature of being human.
